What’s interesting about the two passages is that they all talk about young people and the amazing things they do, not only for themselves but for something big, someone else. So the similarity of the three articles can be a theme that the teacher can use.
2. The analysis of the students
Students in Grade One are mostly curious about new knowledge and passionate about new things. So most of them are eager to read updated articles that are close to their real lives. This will help the teacher to organize some interesting activities for them to be more involved in the class. However, they are lacking in vocabulary. This will add some difficulties to the teaching procedure. In general, students are eager to learn but need to be patiently guided.
3. Teaching Aims
Aim of language knowledge:
1) Help students to briefly summarize the general idea of the three passages.
2) Get the structure of each passage.
3) Learn how to help the G20 summit and how to find out the real purpose of traveling.
Aim of language skill:
To train students’ skills of reading, listening and speaking, and cultivate their capability of processing and analyzing the information in English. Encourage students to express their own ideas in English.
Aim of emotion and attitude:
1) Get them to know the talents of young volunteers for the G20 summit and the real purpose of traveling.
2) Encourage students to show their talents, create new things and experience more in life.
3) Cultivate students’ cooperative consciousness through the process of teamwork.
4. Important and difficult points of teaching
1) Help students learn how to get the general idea of each passage.
2) Help them know some important language points in each passage.
3) Help them understand the contribution that some volunteers made to make the world a better place and the real purpose of traveling.
4) Some long and complicated sentences and unfamiliar words.
5. Teaching ideas
In this class, students are expected to learn about young people who made a difference to the world after learning three passages in this newspaper. I need to firstly introduce the basic elements of how to reading an article. Then, when I deal with the two articles, compared with the teaching of reading part, I should focus on the structure of the two articles only rather than the understanding of the content and the cultivation of students’ reading ability. Students will know what should be included in the text after learning two articles. In the process of group work, the teacher’s role can be an organizer, promoter, instructor, cooperator. During the presentation part, after students presented their work, teacher must give appropriate evaluation and asking some other students to give their own evaluation. With concrete evaluation, the presentation part can be thought as a complete one.
6. Teaching preparations
The teacher needs to prepare the well-designed PowerPoint, reading materials and pictures about two relative historical figures, the table for task-based reading, A4-size paper .
The students need to prepare their books, scissors, colored pens.
