Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Lead-in
Have students talk something about Bill Gates and review the past tense
Step 2 The structure of the past perfect tense
Ask students to look at some sentences which are made up of the past perfect tense, and then make them conclude how to form the past perfect tense.
Step 3 The usage of the past perfect tenses
1. Present students with more examples and have them draw say what are the usages of the past perfect tense
2. Give the conclusion of the usages of the past perfect tenses.
Step 4 Practice: the simple past tense and the past perfect tense
Read the notes about Amelia Earhart on page 49 and then tell us what happened to her. Let students know that whether the simple past tense or the past perfect tense is used depends on the sequence of the events.
1. Complete the story on page 49.
2. Complete the article on page 50 so that the students know more about the differences between the simple past tense and the past perfect tense.
Step 5 Practice
1. Ask students to read the following two sentences and identify the differences between them.
2. Show some pictures of another amazing person — Cai Lun.
3. Let students look at the four pictures, read the sentences and then complete the article.
Step 6 Consolidation
Make a consolidation about what we have learned this class.
Step 7 Homework
1. Do Part C1 and C2 on page 104 in Workbook.
