2. make a time chart when reading a history article
3. state their own opinions on language and culture preservation
Teaching Aids
Computer and overhead projector
Teaching Procedure
Step I Lead-in
Can you make sense of the passages on the screen?
What are the three passages? What languages are they in? When were they written?
1. Beowolf about 900
2. Tales of Caunterbury
By Geoffrey Chaucer 14th century
3. Shall I Compare Thee to a summer’s Day
By William Shakespeare 16th century
Step II Reading strategy
As can be told from the subtitles, the article can be divided into:
Introduction Para. 1
Part I Old English Para.2-3
Part II Middle English Para. 4-6
Part III Modern English Para. 7
And the article is arranged in the order of time.
If we are reading a history article, we may find it boring because it contains lots of dates, years and events, so it would be helpful to make a time chart.
The students will be required to make a time chart.
Step III Reading for the details
1. What does old English consist of? (Background information: who were the Anglo-Saxons?)
2. (Background information: What happened when the Normans came?) What do you think of William the conqueror? What kind of person do you think he was?
