Step 1 Lead-in

Step 2 Pre-reading
Ask students to have a quick look at the passage and answer three questions in Part A.
Have students fill in the blanks with important dates in Part C1.
Step 3 Reading strategy
Tell students that they can easily find out the information according to the dates or years while doing Part C1.
Have students read the Reading Strategy--- reading a history article and ask them to fill in the blanks with key points, like time, places, events and so on.
Step 4 While-reading
Ask students to complete the flow chart according to the clue of dates or years.
eg. Before the middle of the 5th century, people in Britain all spoke______.
Ask students to retell the history and development of the English language according to some tips offered.
eg. before the middle of 5th century, Britain, Celtic
Before the middle of 5th century, people in Britain all spoke Celtic.
