1. Know how to read a history article by using a thinking map in the form of the chart

2. Get an overall understanding of the development of English and know more about English culture

3. Express their opinion freely and critically and make a summary

4. Write a passage related to English history and ways of learning English

Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Pre-reading and lead-in

Ask students to read a passage before class and answer the questions:

What do you think is the most difficult part of studying English, pronunciation, grammar, vocabulary or something else?

Do you think English has always stayed the same?

What are the suggestions on learning English according to the passage given?

设计意图:引入话题,激活原有认知,为学生提供一定的语言素材,为写作铺垫。

Step 2 Skimming

Talk about reading strategy.

Draw a thinking map of the development of English according to the time order.

Step 3 Scanning

Read again and answer questions:

Is old English a mixture of Celtic, Angle and Saxons?

Why are many of the words for animals different from those for meat in English? Was English replaced by French at that time?
