Learn to explain the Chinese characters by the way it forms.

Teaching procedures:

Step 1: Lead-in

Q: Do you think Chinese characters remain the same for thousands of years? (No.)

Tell the students that Chinese characters are always changing. Look at the different forms of characters and explain to Ss the “Seven Styles of Chinese characters(汉字七体”).

Then show the students a picture of a running horse. Simplify the image using lines. And explain how it became the origin of the character “马”. Introduce the topic “The development of Chinese characters”.

【设计说明】作为文本阅读的导入,主要实现:挑动学生的学习兴趣,激发学生的学习热情,自然而然地引至主题。

Step 2: Reading

1. Scan the text to answer two questions:

(1) How old is the Chinese writing?

(2) Who first invented Chinese writing?

2. Listen to the recording of the article and match the main idea with each paragraph. Then conclude the structure of the text.

3. Read the article carefully to find details:

Para.1: What makes the Chinese language differ from many western languages?

Para.2: How did Cang Jie invent the Chinese writing?

Para.2-4: How are Chinese characters formed?

(Find out the sentences to show the way characters are formed.And discuss in pairs to give more examples for each type of character.)
