Analysis of the students:
The topic of lost civilizations is new and attractive to students in Grade One, so it is important to arouse students’ interest in this class by adopting creative ways and providing various kinds of information. Students will be highly involved in activities concerned.
Teaching aims:
To help students analyze the basic structure of the passage.
To develop students’ ability of reading diary entries.
To develop students’ ability of working in groups and cooperating with others.
To enable students to describe one of the civilizations.
To encourage students to use their imagination and develop their creative minds.
To arouse students’ awareness of protecting civilizations.

To help students analyze the basic structure of the passage and the details of it.
To enable students to describe what they have known about ancient civilizations.

Teaching procedures:
Ⅰ. Lead-in
Show pictures of the seven wonders of the ancient world before class to arouse students’ interest. Get students to answer the question “which of the seven wonders remains till today?”
Play a matching game to see what other ancient civilizations students know about. Get them to think about the similarity between Pompeii and Loulan, thus introducing the topic of today’s class – lost civilizations.
Present the learning goals.
Ⅱ. Fast reading
Discuss the type of the passage, and explain the strategy of reading diary entries.
Scan the passage and divide it into three parts according to the travel schedule. Pay attention to the dates and place names.
Ⅲ. Detailed reading
Watch the video of the passage.
