Step 1 lead-in
The teacher will tell students a story about herself and then introduce the topic to be discussed in this period.
T: I’m not happy today. Do you want to know what happened to me ?
S: Yes…..
T: Yesterday, I lost my purse. It’s really important to me, as there is a watch, a cell phone and some money in it. Now not only my parents but also my best friend is looking for it. What bad luck ! It’s nowhere to be seen by now. What should I do ? Could you give me some advice?
S: You should ……
T: Sounds great. After class, I will have a try. Now let’s come back to the two sentences in the story. There is a watch, a cell phone and some money in it. Not only my parents but also my best friend is looking for it. Pay attention to the subjects and verbs in the sentences. As we all know, in English, when the subject is singular, the verb is singular too. Instead, when the subject is plural, the verb is plural. However in the sentences, the subjects are plural, the verbs are singular. Why ?
S:就近一致原则
T: Great, you are so clever. 就近一致means that the verb should agree with its closest noun in the subject. Tell me the other principles of subject-verb agreement besides 就近一致.
S:语法一致, 意义一致
T: Yes. You have got it. You must have watched the videos about subject-verb agreement carefully.
Step 2 review
The teacher will ask students to review what they have learn from the videos by having a discussion about the best way to do such exercises and analyzing some of the exercises; Ask students to find out the exercises with the same rule;
T: I gave you some exercises about subject-verb agreement before the lesson. Have you finished ?
S: Yes.
T:Now, I will show you the answers. Check your answer and correct the mistakes. Ok, time is up.
Next, think about “what’s the best way to do such exercises ?” I give you 1 min.
