Teaching process:
Step1. Greetings & Lead-in
1.Enjoy a video
1)How do you feel the video?
2)What is the video about?
3)Can you guess the topic we are going to talk about today?
2. Appreciate some pictures and answer the following questions:
1)Where do we see these ads?
2)Which ads make you want to buy a product or service? Why?
3)Which ads make you think about social problems? Why?
Step2. Group Discussion
Read the advertisements below and describe them by using 3 to 4 sentences. Try to answer the questions:
1. What image can you see on each poster?
2. What can you learn from each poster?
3. Why are the ads created?
For example: This poster offers the airline service. It uses “ I love to fly with Oxlin Airlines” to attract people. Taking airlines is a fast way to get to another place. In this way much of time can be saved.
Step3. Competition
Which part of ads attract you most? Picture? Music? Slogan? Or figure?
Are you familiar with the slogans of some famous ads?
Divide the whole class into two parts--- boys and girls. Encourage them to think of as many slogans of some famous ads as possible.
Step4. Debate
Encourage students to have a debate: ‘advertising for products does more good than harm’ or ‘advertising for products does more harm than good’
Step 5. Conclusion &Homework
In conclusion, there are two types of ads --- commercial advertising and public service advertising. We always see them on the Internet, in newspapers, on magazines or in leaflets given out in the street. They use charming pictures to attract us and express their special meanings. Nearly all ads have their unique slogan which is brief.
