1. Make students identify the differences between CAs and PSAs and be smart to ads.

2. Help students learn how to analyze an expository writing and apply it.

Teaching methods:

Task-based approach; content-based approach; cooperative learning

Teaching procedure:

Step 1 lead-in

Show students short videos and ask what they are about and What they persuade people to do.

Step 2 Fast reading

Read the text quickly and answer the following questions.

1. What do ads try to persuade people to do?

2. What does PSA stand for?

3. What do PSAs aim to do?

Step 3 Reading for details.

Part1: What is an advertisement?

1. Ask the Ss to read this part to get the author’s definition of advertisements.

2. More questions to help the Ss understand this part:

★Where can we see advertisements?

★What types of advertisement do we have?

★Show the Ss some pictures of the two kinds of ads and ask the Ss to tell which type they belong to.

Then ask: What’s the difference between commercial ads and PSAs?

Part2: Does an advertisement tell people the complete truth?

1. Ask the Ss to skim the text to get the author’s answer to this question

2. Ask the Ss to have a more careful reading and ask the Ss the discuss how the writer supports his idea

3. Ask the Ss: Does the writer make any conclusion about this part?

4. According to the above three parts, explain to the Ss the structure of expository writing:
