Teaching procedure:

Step 1 Greetings and lead-in

A guessing game is played which is meant to show some examples of commercial advertisements and PSAs and their slogans. This way, a warming-up is conducted and meanwhile the topic of this lesson is also naturally presented.

Step 2 Read for general information

Get the students to explore the structure of the article with the help of reading strategy.

Have the students skim and scan the article and answer the three questions on the screen. Encourage the students to complete some related tasks, such as sentence-making, gap-filling and a mini-interview.

This way, the students will get the main idea of the passage.

Step 3 Read for detailed information

1. Encourage the students to complete some related tasks, such as question-and –answer, true -or-false, and multiple choices to understand the article better.

2. Get the students to compare commercial advertisements and PSAs to make sure the students aware of the similarities and differences between them.

This way, the students will acquire an overall understanding of the article.

Step 4 Summary

Encourage the students to sum up what they have learned about the article by completing a short passage. This way, the students recap the key content of the article.

Step 5 A group competition

A group competition concerning the advantages and disadvantages of advertisements is organized to motivate the students in their exploration of advertisements.

Step 6 Homework

Write a passage under the title of The Advantages and Disadvantages of Advertisements in 150 words, using the basic structure of expository writing.

Work in groups, and try to write an advertising slogan for Qingshan Senior High School.
