By the end of the class, students will be able to

a) Speak out English names of the sports;

b) Know the structure of the speech;

c) Find out some specific information;

d) Read another article related to the same topic.

Important and difficult points:

To do some extensive reading about the Olympic Games.

Procedures:

Step1: Lead-in (3m)

1 Teacher shows two videos about the Olympic Games, and ask students to list the sports shown in the videos in order to help students get to know the class’s topic.

2. Have a competition: students try to speak out as many English names of the sports as possible according to their teammate's gesture within 30 seconds

Step2: Intensive Reading (25m)

1 Students skim the speech and try to answer four questions: (7m)

(1) What is the speech about?

(2) When did the ancient Olympic Games begin?

(3) When ware the contemporary Olympics first held?

(4) How many famous athletes are mentioned in the speech? And who are they?

2 Structure of the speech (4m)

Para1: the topic of the speech

Para2-4: the history and

significance of the Olympic Games

Para5-8: some famous athletes

and their great achievements

Para9: the ending of the speech

3 Analysis of Para2-4 (4m)
