Step 1 Warm-up questions
1. How many words are there in the English language?
2. How many words do we know? How many of them do we use?
3. What do you do when you come across new words? (context/ the word itself)
(to introduce the way of guessing the meaning of a word-- to guess from the specific word formation)
Step 2 Lead-in
Read for fun:
Show students some English brain twisters, and let them guess the answers and the meaning of the words in bold.
Why did the man tie a million balloons to his house?
He wanted to see a housefly!
Why did the man feed his dog a watch?
He wanted a watchdog.
Why did the astronaut take a fishing pole(鱼竿) to the moon?
He was hoping to catch a starfish.
Ask students the similarity of the three words in bold, and introduce the definition of a compound word.
“A compound word is a word made up of two other words that can be used by themselves.”
