Step1: Lead-in
Play a guessing game. Let the students guess what sports they belong to.
Step2: Read and answer
Read the passage in 3 minutes and answer the following questions:
What are the requirements for a sport to enter the Olympics?
Which sports were removed from the Olympics?
Which sports were added to the Olympics?
Which sports were applying to enter the Olympics? Why is it not approved by the IOC?
Step3: Detailed reading of passage1
After students grasp the main idea of the passage, analyze the passage in details and fill in the blanks.
Step4: Reflection and pair discussion
Reflect on one question with a better understanding of the passage: what is the purpose of sport?
Discuss in pairs and invite students to express their opinions.
Step5: About Olympics
Cite some examples about doping cheats and anti-doping program.
Associate them with the motto of Olympics.
Then introduce the topic “winning isn’t everything”.
Step6: Introduce the topic: Winning isn’t everything
Read the passages in 3minutes and find out the detailed information about two groups.
