Step One Lead-in
Ask students to tell us the names some science fiction stories or films and write them down on the blackboard.
Questions:
Do you know any science fiction stories? Can you share with us?
Show some pictures of some films to arouse students’ interest and introduce the topic-science fiction.
Step Two Fast Reading
Students are expected to read the two passages quickly and answer the questions:
1. How many science fiction stories are there in this passage? What are they?
Answer: Journey to the centre of the earth; The time machine
2. Who are the writers of the stories? Have you ever heard of them?
First introduce the writer Jules Verne and his works briefly.
Step Three Careful Reading
Task one
Ask students to scan the story and answer the three questions:
1. What was the destination of the journey? How did they go there?
2. What did they see during their journey?
3. How did they come back to the world above?
4. Which do you think was the most thrilling experience during their journey? Why?
5. What did he find when he traveled to year AD 802,701?
6. What was the world 30 million years into the future like?
