Teaching aims:
After reading the passage, the students will be able to
1. have a good understanding of the text and get some information about “stand-up”;
tell different types of stand-up;
learn something about Billy Crystal and make comments on him;
learn to have an optimistic attitude towards life.
Teaching procedures:
Before class, a video by Mr. Bean is given for the Ss to enjoy.
Step 1 lead in
Talk about Mr. Bean’s performance. (silly, funny, interesting, ridiculous, exaggerating ---, anyway, it makes us laugh.)
A funny performance usually makes you laugh, and there are other things that will make you laugh.

3. Lead the Ss to learn another form of comedy --- stand-up.

从学生所熟知的憨豆先生的表演入手,引起学生的兴趣,然后再问起还有哪些形式会引人发笑也就顺理成章。在这个过程中引入“stand-up”这个概念很容易引起学生的好奇,为下一步的阅读做好铺垫。
Step 2 Fast reading
Ask the Ss to read the first paragragh and try to give a definition to “stand-up”.
Ask the Ss to read the subtitles and give the main idea of the text.
Ask the Ss to read part 1 to get 4 types of stand-up.

让学生通过阅读第一段和小标题获取文章主体意思,既可以避免学生长时间阅读的沉闷,又可以引导学生对文章首段和小标题的关注,有利于其阅读策略的养成。
Step 3 Careful reading
Listen and read the part of “Types of stand-up”
Ask the Ss to watch and listen to a flash to find out the different types of stand-up.
(If the Ss don’t know the meaning the new words of the four types, guide them to guess from the context.)
