Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Revision
In the previous class, you learned how to change stress into your friend from a new perspective. Let’s have a brief revision. In the first part, Miss Xu showed you a video from TED, what conclusion have we drawn from the video? (If we view stress response as helpful, our body’s stress response can be healthier.) In the second, you were asked to read a passage. This time, what conclusion can we come to? (When we choose to reach out to others, either to seek support or help someone else, our stress response becomes healthier and we recover faster from stress.)
Step 2 Writing 1
Now I’d like you to write a summary of the whole speech using about 30 words based on the topic and the two conclusions, avoiding the original expressions.
Since the original expressions cannot be used, I’d like to introduce some ways to paraphrase, that is, to express the same meaning in different ways or to combine much information into one sentence.
Change the part of speech
Use words of similar meanings
Adopt the opposite ways
Change the structure of a sentence
Use the possible transitions
Have you got the idea? Now please write the summary. (presentation)
Step 3 Discussion and writing 2
We have known that social contact and social support is a good way to deal with stress. But if you are on your own, what will you do to relieve the bad effect of stress? (Students give answers.)
You’ve done a good job. Now I’d like to give you ten tips of dealing with stress for your reference, including social and individual activities.
Try not to "self-medicate" with diet formulas, alcohol, or over-the-counter medicines such as sleeping pills. Covering up a problem can make the stress even worse.
Do something just for yourself. A trip to the hair salon, or having a massage can work wonders when you're under a lot of stress.
Eat at least one hot meal a day. Good nutrition is of importance because it gives your body the fuel it needs to deal with daily stress.
Share how you are feeling with someone you can trust and who will listen to you. As an old saying goes, "A joy shared is doubled, and a sorrow shared is halved."
Exercising at least three days per week for at least 30 minutes each time improves your fitness and your sense of well being.
If you are a smoker, stop smoking and start breathing clean air. Smoking and stress are a dangerous combination.
If you are a coffee or cola lover, cut down on these and other drinks that contain caffeine.
Learn and use relaxation exercises such as yoga, meditation, or other stress-relieving activities of interest to you.
Laughter is the best medicine. So it is. Laughing releases chemicals in the brain that help promote a relaxation response. Rent a comedy from a video store. Share it with friends and laugh your stress away.
Get regular physical exams. Your health care provider can spot health problems related to stress and can provide you with practical suggestions.
