Analysis of the teaching materials
This section is designed to help students learn and use English through doing a project. Students are first asked to read two essays in Part A. Then they are asked to write an essay about their ideas of happiness. The two readings have a similar structure serve as a model for students’ writing. While reading the essays, the students are expected to practice such reading skills as scanning and critical thinking. The essays by students will later be collected and made into a handbook. The purpose of this section is to help students use what they learnt to finish a project by working together. During the course of doing the project, students will discuss what to write about in their essays and how to prepare the happiness handbook. In order to finish the project, they are expected to cooperate with their group members to fulfill each part of the work.

1. Pre-reading tasks
Task 1Lead-in: What happiness means to me (brainstorm)
Purpose: Students share their understanding of what happiness means, and get them interested in the topic and prepare them for the two reading essays below. This step serves as an extension as well as a revision of what the students have learnt.
Activities:
1. Getting to know each other— self-introduction: Teacher makes a brief self-introduction and asks some students to introduce themselves. Then Teacher introduces the topic and talks with students about what makes people happy.
2. Watch a video clip: Students watch a video clip about what makes people happy. A reporter is interviewing some people in the street and asks them what makes them happy.
3. Extension work: Students answer questions according to the pictures on the screen.
4. Group work: In each group, one student plays the role of the reporter and interviews his/her group member. At last, report the findings to the whole class.
