2. Brainstorming

T: Do you know how people greet each other in different countries?

For example, in Japan? In China? In America?

How do Chinese people greet each other in formal situations?

Can you think of some ways of greeting?

(Possible answers: bow/ smile/ hug/ kiss and so on.)

(About 3 minutes)

Step2. Act It Out

Pair Work:

Give students 2 minutes to read the information on Page33.

Then let them fill in the blanks together and invite four pairs of students to come to the front to present different kinds of greeting.

T: As a saying goes,‘When in Rome, do as the Romans do.’

(This step intends to arouse students’ interests and make them involved in this class.)

Step3. While reading

T: Now, let’s enjoy reading and exploring the beauty of cultural differences!

Task1: Fast reading

1. Read through the passage quickly and answer the three questions.

eg. Q: How many people are involved in this conversation? Who are they?

A: Peter comes from the UK, and Waled is from Brunei.

(In this step, I’ll show the world map to the students and point out Brunei’s location.)

2. Critical Thinking

T: After scanning this article, please tell me how the speakers support their ideas? (By giving examples.)

Task2: Careful reading

Example 1: Receiving presents (Lines 1-13) Listen & Answer

In the west, it’s considered rude and impolite not to open a present as soon as someone gives you one. Westerners want the receiver to open it in front of the giver, because they like to see how he or she reacts.
