Analysis of the teaching materials
The reading passage is conversation about cultural differences. Three students, from China, Brunei and the UK, have a discussion about this issue. In this section students will gain some information about the cultures of different countries and learn to communicate cross-culturally. The reading strategy in this unit teaches students how to understand examples in the texts. Students are expected to put the skill into practice.
Key points: learning about cultural differences and understanding the use of examples in the passage while reading
Difficulties: having a right attitude towards our traditional cultures and cultures from other countries
Procedures:
Step 1. Lead-in
Activity 1: Pair work
Imagine that you were abroad, what would make you unhappy?
Activity 2: Q&A
Why is food in Australia different from that in China?
Purpose: Students imagine their lives abroad and the teacher shares her experience in Australia so that the topic---cultural differences is put forward.
Step 2 Checking corner
Activity 1: Q&A
How many people are involved in the conversation?
Who are they?
Where do they come from?
Activity 2: One student comes to the board to circle the three country.
Activity 3: Tick out the things mentioned
Presents; wedding traditions; pointing; ways to go into one’s house; Bonfire Night
Purpose: Check students’ homework. Meanwhile, through the map students can have a concrete understanding of geographical differences, which enables them know cultural differences better.
