Develop the students’ reading ability---how to mast the main idea of the passage and guess the meanings of new words.
Teaching difficult points:
1. Find the main points and express them.
2. Understand the text and know something about the two mian medicines.
Teaching Procedures:
Step1. Greeting and Lead-in
People may take medicines when they are ill. However, if they don’t take the right medicine in the right way, they may not get better and even get worse.
Have you ever got a fever? And what medicine do you often take when you get a high fever?
Step2. Skimming
Go through the text and find out the structure of the text:
the two main life-saving medicines: Aspirin and penicilline
Step3. The story of aspirin
Ask Ss to scan the passage to answer the following questions:
When was one of the medicines first sold as a tablet?
what's the use of aspirin?
Step4. Careful reading
1. Read the passage again and ask the students to find out the development of the two medicines.
Development of Aspirin:
In 1897:was invented
In 1899:first trials took place
In 1900: sold in shops as a tablet
In 1950: as the best-selling painkiller recorded in the Guinness Book
In 1971: proved to be a blood-thinning medicine
In 1977: used to prevent a stroke
