Teaching procedures:

Step 1 Lead-in

When we are learning about a new topic, for example, getting information from the Internet, we need to collect facts and figures. Facts and figures can be found in texts which are organized in sentences and paragraphs, like the text and project. We call those texts Continuous texts (连续文本). Facts and figures can also be presented in the form of charts, graphs, diagrams, which are called Non-continuous texts (非连续文本). Examples are pie charts, bar charts, flow charts, line graphs, maps, or tables.

The task in this unit is to understand and describe graphic information.

In this period, we will deal with Skills building 1, trying to grasp the reading strategy of graphic information. The purpose of Skills building 2, forming specific questions, is to help get more specific information from the charts you read. After this period, hopefully, we will be well prepared for the writing of analyzing graphic information.

Step 2 Reading strategy

The table on P42 that we’ve done is a non-continuous texts showing readers information clearly and accurately. So how do we read graphic information? Here are the strategies (P42).

Read the title so you know what facts and figures are represented

Read the captions along the side and the bottom of a chart

Look at and understand the key or legend in the chart.

Plus : Read the charts for facts and figures.

Here is an example.

Title: A school survey about students’ hobbies and interests

Based on a sample of 870 students

Please find out the title, the caption and the key. Explain their functions in understanding the chart.

Step 3 Getting information from different charts

1. Read the bar chart on P43 and fill in the blanks.

2. Please read the pie chart on P43 and answer the following questions.
