Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Brainstorming
Show some pictures to the students, and tell the students stories of remote areas. Ask them “ How do you come to school every day? ”
Step 2 Sharing information and discussion
Discuss the seven pictures in the book (Page 49). Encourage the students to express what is included in “public transport”. Ask students to have a group discussion and make a comparison among all the means of transport mentioned in this section
Buses and Coaches
Buses have routes. They pick up and drop off people at different places on the route. It is a popular means of transport within a city.
Coaches are buses that carry people over long distances.
In the 19th century, steam trains helped transport people all over the world.
In the 19th century, roads became crowded in cities and so underground trains became popular.
The maglev train is a new form of transport. It is powered by magnets.
Aeroplanes and ships
Aeroplanes are used to travel quickly over long distances.
Ships were a popular way to travel from place to place in the 20th century.
Step 3 summary and discussion
1. Ask the students to list all the means of transport that are mentioned above according to 3 categories.

Step 4 Questions and answers
What is the difference between a bus and a coach?
Why do you think people would choose to travel by aeroplane rather than by ship?
