Step 1: Leading-in
Ask students the following questions:
Do you like poems?
Can you recite some famous Chinese poems?
Then present several poems freely and share them with students. Ask one student to recite a poem “ Auld lang syne” in Chinese.
Do you know the poet of this poem?
Well, in fact, this poem is tended to be a song. Do you know how to sing it in English?
Let’s listen to this song and sing it together:
Then introduce the song briefly:
■ It is a Scottish po em written by Robert Burns and set to the tune
of a traditional folk song.
■It has been used in the famous film Waterloo Bridge.
■ It is also well known in many English-speaking countries and is often sung to celebrate the start of the new year at the stroke of midnight

Read the report on poetry of Robert Burns’s ‘A Red, Red Rose’ on page 14 and skim for its main idea and structure.
