Teaching procedures:
Step 1 Lead in
Enjoy a famous poem.
Brainstorm and thus introduce the subject to be learned.
Step 2 Homework checking
Ask students to present the information they’ve found about Robert Burns and his poetry.
Figure out the features of Burn’s poetry.
Step 3 Poetry appreciation
Play the tape for the students to listen and identify the theme& feelings expressed.
Read the poem aloud and find out the rhyming words.
Show students an exemplified symbol word and allow them several minutes to figure out other symbols.
Focus on the figures of speech and ask students to work out the example lines.
Step 4 Language extension
Present two versions of Tune “Like A Dream” translated by Yang Xianyi and Xu Yuanchong.
Appreciate the two versions. Give their own comments, using strategies they’ve learned.
Step 5 Language output
Give students several minutes to prepare their own poems.
Let students present their poems.
Encourage students to remark on each other’s poems.
