To guide the students to analyze the plot of the book so as to explore the philosophy of life conveyed between lines.

Teaching difficulties:

For those who are not quite familiar with this book, how to help smooth away their reading obstacles is very challenging.

For those who show little interest in this book, how to get them involved and interested is really tricky.

Teaching procedures

Step 1: Lead in

A short video is shown to arouse students’ interest as well as to introduce the topic.

设计意图及效果:

自制暖场视频中出现了30多本英文经典小说的封面,有些是学生熟悉的, 有些是学生比较陌生的。 学生在看的过程中不自觉地猜测书名,在放松的状态下形成有效注意,为创设良好的学习氛围创造了条件。

Small talk –“ share your favorite book and tell us why”

Interview some students randomly and encourage them to name a book they’ve already read or read a book they are going to read and explain the reason briefly.

设计意图和效果:

联系学生的个人世界和主观体验,让学生对本课的经典阅读话题有一个心理上的准备。同时也可以让学生开启用英文思维并表达自己的模式。学生在此过程中的一些个性化表达不仅能活跃课堂氛围,也能为后面的阅读分析分享提前做好铺垫。

Step 2:Guided reading

About the author Jack London

Students are instructed find as much information as possible to outline his life experiences, list his representative works and find out his attitude towards life.

设计意图和效果:

学生通过研读作者介绍,了解作者生平大概、代表著作、以及作品中所传递的生活态度。通过对这三个方面的梳理分析,学生能体会作者生活经历、作品以及生活态度之间的相互依存、相互影响的关系,从而更好地理解作者的写作风格和传递的人生哲学。这为接下来解读《野性的呼唤》这本书做好充分准备,同时也让学生带着问题去探究这本书是否也传递了这样的人生哲学。
