II. Teaching Focus and Difficulties:
Guide students to explore the theme of the passage and develop critical thinking.
Equip students with some writing techniques, preparing them for the writing.
III. Teaching Procedures:
Step 1: Lead-in
Activity: Have a free talk with students about reading and bookstores
Purpose: To lead in the topic and arouse Ss' interest
Step 2: Skimming (para.1-4)
Activity: Skim for the information
Purpose: To read between the lines to understand the first part of the passage and read beyond the lines to understand the feelings conveyed by words and sentences. Meanwhile, introduce some writing techniques
Step 3: Micro-writing(1)
Activity: Involve students in writing some sentences
Purpose: To practise the writing technique: "convey one's emotion through the vivid description"
Step 4: Skimming (para.5-8) & Scanning (para.2/3/8)
Activity: Skim for the information & scan for the clues
Purpose: To read between the lines to understand the second part of the passage and prepare them for writing
Step 5: Micro-writing(2)
Activity: Involve students in writing some sentences
Purpose: To practise the writing technique:"contrast"
Step 6: Critical thinking
Activity: Analyse the last paragraph and the title
Purpose: To help students have a better understanding of the theme
Step 7: Enlightenment
Activity: Discussion
