Teaching procedures
Step1. Lead-in
Lead to the text by playing some videos of operas performed by our students and
teachers to arouse interest in the topic.
Step2. Reading strategy
Help students read a review of an opera better by learning how a review is usually
organized.
a. the background information of the operab. the brief description of the story
c. other information about the performanced. the writer’s comments/evaluation
Step3. Fast-reading
1. Match paragraphs with related information.
2. Search background information about the opera and the the performance.
Step4. Detailed-reading
Explore the story of Turandot by finding out the main characters and their relationship as well as the plot.
Step5. Consolidation
Encourage students to tell the story supposing they were one character in the first person.
Step6. Discussion
Divide students into groups and discuss the following questions:
What contributes to Turandot’s transformation(转变)?
What is the theme of the story?
Why did Giacomo Puccini, an Italian composer write an opera set in China?
What’s the purpose of writing a review?
Step7. Writing
Make a summary about the review if time permits.
