Teaching procedures:
Step 1: Lead in[
Lead in by enjoying a clip of music. And ask students to consider what is a universal language?
Step 2: Reading strategy
Vocabulary building: ask students to preview the key word and phrases.
Step 3: Fast reading
Give students several minutes to read the passage quickly and divide the whole passage into 4 parts.
Step 4: Detailed reading
Read paragraph 1 and 2, and find the key information about the author and setting of the opera.
Read paragraph 3-7,and find the answers to the questions. The questions are as follows: Main characters of the story? The development of the plot ? The theme of the story
Ask students to fill all the blanks, and try to retell the story of Turandot with the help of words and phrases provided.
Read paragraph 8, and find the information about the director, the conductor and the actors.
Q: What is the theme of the love story?
A: Love can conquer the cruelty.
Direct Students to analyse the passage structure.
Give students the definition of review.
What is a review?
A review is a report or an essay giving some information as well as some opinions or ideas about a book, a performance, a painting or something similar.
What should we pay attention to while reading a review of an opera?
Brief background information about the opera.
Other important information such as the actor’s names and finally a comment.
Lots of words that describe the author's feelings.
