Show a picture of the famous director: Zhang Yimou, and then ask the students:
Who is this man in the picture?
Have you seen any of Zhang Yimou’s films? If yes, name some of them.
What else has Zhang Yimou directed besides films?
Prepare some films which are directed by Zhang Yimou in advance:
e.g. Curse of the Golden Flower; Raise the Red Lantern;
Under the Hawthorn ['h??θ??n] Tree; Red Sorghum ['s??g?m];
The Flowers of War; The Great Wall;
Show another picture of the Olympic Games as a hint, guide the students to answer:
Zhang Yimou also directed The opening ceremony of the 29th Beijing Olympic Games.
Show some pictures which is related to the topic:
Apart from films and opening ceremony of Olympic Games, Zhang once directed a world-famous opera – Turandot.
Step2: Introduction
An opera named Turandot was directed by Zhang Yimou, set/performed in the Forbidden City
