Teaching difficult & important points: how to use relative pronouns
Teaching procedures:
Step I. Lead-in
Help students to get a general understanding about what the Attributive Clause is and the function of it by showing them the chart.
Step II. Help students understand the function of Attributive Clause by some example sentences.
Step III. Learn to use the relative pronouns
Give students some examples to show how to use relative pronouns and ask students to tell us the member of the sentence that the relative pronouns express.
Step IV. Practice
1.Show students some sentences and ask them to underline the antecedent and attributive clauses ,and point out the member of the sentence that the relative pronouns express.
1), The woman who can speak Russian got the job.
2), The woman whom we saw on the street got the job.
3), This is the factory that I visited.
4), His film which won several awards was about the life of Gandhi.
5), He is the boy whose English is very good in our class.
2.Fill in the blanks with proper relative words
1).The man who/that stands there is Tom.
2).The girl (whom/that)I met is Ms Li.
3).The boy whose watch was lost is Tom
4).The book which/that lies on the desk is his.
5).The pen (which/that)you bought is good.
6).The magazine whose cover is red is nice.
After several minutes ,check their answers.
Step V. Some important points about the usage of relative pronouns “that” and “who”, then show students some examples.
After that , give students some sentences to find out the faults and correct them.
