In this class, the students will be enabled to
learn what a definition is and its functions in Reading Comprehension;
summarize the sentence patterns and other expressions to give definitions;
do some reading and writing practice to consolidate their learning of the usage of definitions.
Teaching procedures
Step 1: Lead-in
Have students read a passage and discuss what the definition of happiness is.
Step 2: An introduction to definitions
1) Tell students what a definition is.
2) Have students read three more passages and summarize the sentence patterns to give formal definitions.
3) Then encourage students to read two more passages and summarize some expressions to give informal definitions.
Step3: Reading practice
Have students do some reading practice to analyze the functions of definitions in different question types in Reading Comprehension.
Step4: Writing practice
Encourage students to choose one topic and give their own definitions using those sentence patterns or expressions.
