Teaching procedure:
Step 1 Lead-in
T draws a map of Africa, and asks Ss to say something about Africa.
Q1: What do you think of when it comes to Africa?
Q2: what can we do to help them?
Step 2 Fast-reading
T asks Ss to skim the text to find out the Chinese saying 授人以鱼,三餐之需;授人以渔,终生之用。
Step 3 Careful reading
Ask Ss to read the first 3 paragraphs carefully to find out the long-term problems and the short-term solutions.
Ask Ss to read paragraph 4 to find out why food aid alone is not enough.
Read paragraphs 5 and 6 to find out the long-term solution and two specific ways.
Conclude the text, and analyze the structure.
Structure:
Step 4 Reading strategy: understanding a title
Paras 1-3 Introduce the theme: help developing countries
Para 4 Quote a saying
Paras 5-7 Use the saying to develop the theme
Para 8 Return to the saying and refer once again to the title.
