Step1 warm-up activities
①watch a video about Mother’s Day and think about the questions
Choose a key word to describe your Mum.(adj. n.) Ask:
Why do you choose the word?
② show some pictures and predict the meanings of unfamiliar words. e.g. gush, gutter, soaked and awning
Step2 reading
⑴Stimulate the students’ interests by asking:
What makes a story? (5w)
What makes a story more than just a story?(the theme)
Go through the passage and find the answers.
⑵Group discussions:
a. Is it fun standing under the awning just inside the door of the Wal-Mart?
b. Why did the entire crowd become dead silent?
c. What did the crowd do after they ran through the rain?(para14)
d.There are three contrasts in the passage and describe them in your own words.
Step3 further understanding of the passage
Analyze the structure of the passage.
Read the author’s THOUGHTS and find the theme.
What did the author see behind the contrasts and those qualities?
Explore the social issues of the us; how to achieve success out of unfavorable situation.
Step4 reflection on the passage
To everyone there are twists and turns under heaven. I do hope you still take the time to run through the rain.
