Teaching steps
Step One : Lead-in
(A Dineyland animated film “ Zootopia” )
Everyone comes to Zootopia, thinking they could be anything they want. But you can't. You can only be what you are. Sly fox. Dumb bunny. And that is not wet cement.
Ask students to guess what wet cement means and introduce the definition of “idiom”
An Idiom is a group of words or an expression with a meaning that is quite different from the meanings of the individual words.
Step Two : Review some idioms that students are familiar with.
1. A piece of cake = Child’s play = as easy as pie
2. Luckydog
3. It’s raining cats and dogs.
4. have butterflies in one’s stomach.
5. One’s cup of tea.
Step Three : Guess the meaning of some idioms.
1. He is so handsome. He is my Mr. Right.
2. Remember that money may bring you happiness, but sometimes it is a Pandora’s box.
3. You want me to go away? Over my dead body!
4. The match this afternoon is a diamond cut diamond. It must be wonderful.
5. William really should’t play the piano— he has Van Gogh’s ear for music.
6. A: I can’t imagine she has done such a terrible thing.
B : You see that cats always hide their claws.
7. It’s getting late. Let’s call it a day.
8. A: It’s said that Jim got divorced last week.
B: Who told you about it?
A: Ah, a little bird told me.
