2.Ability objectives:

1). To improve students’ four basic abilities, especially reading ability by using skimming, scanning and understanding the structure of the passage.

2). To enable students to grasp some good words and expressions and use them to express their opinions on related topics.

3. Emotional and Cognitive objectives:

To enable the students to figure out the implied meaning independently. Practice their teamwork and critical thinking abilities.

Teaching focuses and difficulty:

The focuses of this lesson are:

1. Understand what a gap year is and its benefits.

2. Grasp the usage of some words and expressions.

3. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and find out whether it is worth taking a gap year.

The difficult point is to let the students know what the gap year is, how do people spend the gap year and why do people take the gap year. More importantly, students should be guided to weigh its advantages and disadvantages and find out whether it is suitable for themselves by thinking critically.

Teaching methods:

TBLT: task-based language teaching method.

Communicative teaching method.

Teaching Aids:

1. A blackboard.

2. The multimedia.

Teaching procedures:

Step1: Greetings and lead-in

Greet the whole class and ask them to pay attention to the topic: mind the gap. Ask them what is the meaning of ‘gap’ and introduce gap year to them. Have students listen to a BBC’ radio program and complete the definition of a gap year.

Step 2: While-reading

Task1: Ask students read the first two paragraphs silently and find out the answers to the following two questions. Have them realize the current trend of the British high school students.

Q1. What will the British students do during a gap year?

Q2: What kind of graduates do more and more companies prefer to hire ?

Task 2: Skimming and scanning for the detailed information
