Have a better understanding of some strategies of dealing with the task-based
reading and cloze.
Know better about how to make a summary based on a given passage.
Be morally educated by understanding the topic “respect”.
Teaching steps:
Step1: Guide students to get involved in finding the answers to the questions of the task-based reading. Introduce the skills of paraphrase and collocation to students, helping them solve the difficulties.
Step2:
(Lead in this part using pictures and video of Trump and Meryl Streep.
(Ask students to discuss the answers and give the proof. Then cope with several
difficult points by using some skills like synonym and paraphrase. At the same time, provide some tips on how to solve problems for students.
(After providing one example, direct students to find the powerful sentences expressing the strong feelings of the speakers. And then share these sentences together, in which case, the cloze material can be fully used.
Step3: Draw a conclusion about the skills and tips mentioned in the task-based reading and cloze. Students are advised to use these skills when writing a summary.
Step4:
( According to the composition material, students are required to write a summary under the guidance, working in groups.
( After finishing writing, each group will present their summary. Students from other groups will make some comments. In this case, students will enhance the awareness of good writing.
( Supply students with possible versions of summary, reminding students to apply the skill of paraphrase in their writing again.
Step5: Return to the topic — Respect
If time permits, appreciate more powerful sentences concerning respect.
Step6: Assign homework exercise, asking students to polish their summary and complete their composition.
