Step 1: Lead-in :
Brainstorming — What happened to Stephen Hawking?
This step is aimed at introducing today’s topic and arousing students’ interest in
the following lesson.
Step 2: Reading comprehension:
Tips for reading
Tips for different types of questions, namely detail, inference, and main idea.
Check homework
Get students to use those reading tips to check reading comprehension.
Reading comprehension in class
Read the passage and finish question 1 to 3. Get the students to remember the function of the first paragraph is usually to arouse readers’ interest in the topic and introduce the main topic of the passage.
Finish question 4 and 5
Step 3: Writing
Teach students three steps for writing a summary. First, list key information. Second, filter it. Last, polish up sentences
Task one: write a summary of passage B Sir Clive Sinclair with 30 words or so.
Task two: write a summary of passage C with 30 words or so.
Step 4: Creative Activity:
As for students, what qualities are needed to achieve success? Why?
Discuss it and present your ideas in one paragraph, using a good form of writing, at least
60 words.
Use some advanced vocabulary, good phrases and complex sentences like clauses.
Leader of the group needs to write down the ideas on the paper. Later, reporter in your
group will come to the front to present it.
