To train students’ skill of listening for gist and detailed information.
To involve students in activities to think and talk about volunteer work.
Teaching procedures
Step 1:
Warming up
--- Talk about Inner Mongolia briefly to bring students in Wang Shu’s situation.
--- A question is raised for students to think about and then make a choice.
“Would you like to work and live in Inner Mongolia after graduating from a key university in Beijing?”
Step 2:
Listening
---Students are given 5 questions concerning Wang Shu. They will read the questions beforehand.
---An interview between a reporter and Wang Shu is played for students to listen for what they may need.
---Students are to work in pairs to check their answers, and listen to the interview for the second time.
--- The answers are checked together.
Step 3:
Discussion
---The teacher will ask more questions for students to think over and discuss.
What do you think of Wang Shu?
Is it a good idea to do voluntary work? Why?
Are the people around you doing voluntary work? If not, why?
--- A short video about volunteering is showed for students to learn about others’ viewpoints.
Step 4:
Homework
What voluntary work are you going to do in the coming summer vacation?
Make a plan and set it down.
