The usage of modal verbs
To develop students’ communicative ability: they can use the key words and useful expressions to describe one party.
Teaching aids: multi-media, blackboard
Teaching procedure:
Step1: Warm up and lead in
Introduce the topic of parties and ask students the following questions.
Whether they love parties?
Have you ever taken part in a party? If so, what sort of party was it?
Step2: Before listening
Show some pictures of different parties and ask them to guess what kinds of parties they belong to.
During the explanations of the pictures, elects the vocabulary about parties. Let students understand them in context.
Emphasize the listening strategies of understanding the main idea of the listening material.
Don’t worry if you can’t understand everything.
Listen for important words and phrases.
Try to link key words to topics.
Listen more than once, if possible.
Jot down some notes
Step 3: While listening
Ask students to listen for the first time and answer some general questions.
Play the audio again and ask students to answer some detailed questions. (in the form of multiple choice and blank filling )
According to these modal verbs, introduce the usage of them to students and add more modal verbs like can, could, shall, will, would, may, might, need, ought to. Then do two exercises with the help of pictures.
Prediction
Ask students try to write down the last sentence of the listening material and according to the last sentence, ask students to discuss in group how they think the speaker will continue to talk about.
