Word-learning strategies:
1. use video clips to organize topic-related vocabulary:
happen, recover, recognize, escape, scream, sink, survive etc.
2. focus on phrases and collocations:
all at once, at great speed, soon afterwards, in the direction of, recover from, pick up etc.
Teaching aids:
computer, blackboard, handouts
Teaching procedure:
I. Review
1. The teacher shows some pictures and students recall the words they learned about the sea story in the last period.
2. Students describe the sequence of events briefly using the linking words.
3. The teacher gets students to fill in the blanks to make a summary. (see students’ learning plan)
4. The class read out the paragraphs to check the answers.
II. Vocabulary work
1. The teacher shows some clips of video Titanic and ask students to think of words that can be used to describe the movie scenes. Meanwhile the teacher elicits the words and expressions given in red and students get to understand them. (word level)
2. Students read the sentences aloud to discover the usage of the words and expressions. (sentence level)
3. Students summarize the usage of the key words in the context above.
4. The teacher show the video clips integrally and students work in pairs to retell the story of Titanic briefly using the words and expressions. (text level)
III. Extension
The teacher provides a situation and asks students to do oral practice according to the prompts using as many expressions above.
IV. Homework
1. consolidate the topic-related vocabulary;
2. keep a diary according to the prompts using the words and expressions.
