Students have already learned about some great explorers and their contributions in the history , such as the Vikings and their voyages to America, Columbus ,Dias , Magellan , Captain Cook as well as the Chinese explorer ZhengHe. And in this unit , they have also learned something about adventures in the wild and the possible difficulty . So they should be familiar to the topic .

Teaching procedures:
Step1 Lead-in
Students look at a map of the Antarctic as well as some photos and watch a video about the Antarctic , getting a general impression on the great continent and becoming interested in the beautiful continent.
Ask students to think of some words to describe the continent and give some more words as examples. Then introduce the main characters and lead in to the topic of the lesson.
Step2 Fast reading
Task1 Students skim the passage, get the general idea, try to divide the passage into four parts and match the topics with the parts.
Ask individuals to try and check the answers with the class.
Task2 Students do Exercise3 on page29 and decide whether the following sentences are true or false.
Ask individuals to answer one by one. Then check out the answers with the whole class.
