It is the first lesson of Unit9, which belongs to a reading text.

In this lesson, the developing process of bikes in Amsterdam is mainly dealt with and meanwhile the advantages of bicycles are highlighted.

The purpose of this period is to instruct students to read a newspaper article and understand the main points correctly. The second period is the Present Perfect Continuous, which can encourage students to discover the usage of the grammar in the article by analyzing and practicing.

Analysis of the students:

Students have already learned certain types of reading skills. Besides, they are familiar with bikes.

However, it’s not very easy for some of them to catch the main points of a newspaper article. And they may not know much about bikes in Amsterdam.

Analysis of the application of multimedia to teaching:

1) Multimedia enhances the capacity of the learning content.

2) Multimedia combining pictures and exercises, which can largely motivate students’learning desire and fire them with enthusiasm.

Analysis of the learning strategies:

Students develop the habits of self-studying, processing information and cooperating.

1) To master the following new words and expressions:

benefit, flat, convenient, convenience, parking, thief, chip, insert, indeed, thanks to.

2) To predict the content of the article by the title and to get the main idea by scanning and to get the detailed information by careful reading.

3) To develop the abilities of communication and cooperation.

2. Process and methods:

1) Lead in the article by showing a group of pictures which are related to bikes in our city, and to the Netherlands.

2) During reading predicting, skimming, scanning, discussing, communication and so on are applied.

3) Emotion, attitude and value:

a. To know the advantages of riding bikes

b. To develop the awareness of protecting the environment.

c. To hold a right attitude towards a wide range of transport and advocate using eco-friendly means of transport.
