Teaching key points

? The definition and structure of relative clauses.

? Relative pronouns and Relative adverbs.

Possible problems

? Students may confuse the use of who, whom, that and which or may have doubts about when to omit the relative pronoun.

? Students may also get confused about relative clauses introduced by whose.

Teaching procedures

Step 1 Leading in

Students look at two pictures. In picture one, there is only a boy. In picture two, there are two boys. Ask them the same question: Which one is Harry Porter? To describe the second picture, students have to use relative clauses.

Step 2 The definition and structure of relative clauses

Use an example sentence to explain the definition and function of the relative clause. Then use another example sentence to explain the structure of relative clause.

Step 3 Relative pronouns and relative adverbs

First use a table, and then use some example sentences to show how to correctly use different relatives and relative pronouns.

Step 4 An English song

Enjoy an English music video. Analyse the lyrics containing relative clauses, deepening their understanding of this grammar point. Direct them that we can learn English by listening to English songs in our daily lives.

Step 5 Practice

Have the students do an exercise .Let them complete the sentences with relative pronouns and relative adverbs. They can discuss the answers with deskmates. Then check their answers and correct the mistakes.

Step 6 Well-known sayings

Collect five sentences of well-known sayings which contain relative clauses. Explain their meanings and analyse the usage of relative clauses.
