北师大2003课标版《Literature Spot 5 Sir Gawain and the Green Knight》优质课教案下载
Teaching objectives
Students are to
read a short literary story of Sir Gawain and the Green Knight with a theme of honesty and courage(knightly values in Medieval Time)
explore the inner world of the character and analyze the self-development of the character to better understand the spirits of chivalry
further understand the importance of honesty and courage and connect these 2 good quality to our daily life
Teaching difficulties
The story is set in the Medieval Time and is about one of the round table knights of King Arthur, which means it is a story involving the background information, so students may have no idea of King Arthur stories in the medieval time and the knighthood
And also, this story is a simplified literary story adapted from the modern English poem, which means it has left out some detailed information. So students may find the story a little strange and it also increases the difficulty in the analysis of Sir Gawain.
Considering this is literary reading, how to use the limited class time efficiently will also be a key factor to consider when designing the class.
Teaching procedures
Step 1: Ice-breaking and lead-in
Students are to see pictures taken during my trip to Britain, which will help students get to know me and also lead students to get familiar with 3 key words of the story today as well as to activate students’ background information about the medieval time and knights.
Feedback questions of the students from reading
Students have been advised to read through the story in advance and asked to write down some feedback questions about their understanding and puzzles of the story, some of which will be shown to arouse students’ interest in the story again and will serve as a lead-in to the story.
RISE reading strategies: R(reading)—I(inquring)—S(Sharing)—E(exploring)
Step 2: Read to understand
Students are guided to go through the story line with a series of questions so as to better understand the detailed information of the story.

Step 3: Inquire into Sir Gawain
During this part, students are encouraged to explore the inner feelings of the character with the help of a given example so as to further understand the spirits of chivalry, mainly about honesty and courage, through analyzing the path of self-development of Sir Gawain.
Step 4: Share opinions: Is Sir Gawain a worthy knight or not? Why or why not
After analyzing the character Sir Gawain, students will be guided to focus on the conflict and to further explore the knightly values of honesty and courage, the theme of the story, through discussions and sharing within and between groups.
Step5: Write to express
When students understand “to error is human”, students are guided to think about the good qualities and attitude they learn from the story:to be honest about the mistake and brave to face it so as to become a better person. And to further help students to organize their thoughts, they are guided to put their opinions into writing and then report back.
