Definition: a grammatical mood to express a wish,a suggestion,a command or a condition that is contrary to the fact

Important points:

1、subjunctive in the second and third conditionals

2、subjunctive in object clause

3、subjunctive in subject clause

4、subjunctive in some special occasions

Three different situations(contrary to the real situation)

TimeVerb form in if-clauseVerb form in main clausepresent??past??future??notes:1.Mixed conditionals—conditionals where the tenses in the main clause are different from the tenses in the if-clause

The verb forms of the main clause and if-clause depend on their own tenses

If you had asked him yesterday, you would know what to do today.

2.In second and third conditionals ,the past simple of “be” should only be in the form of “were”

If he were here, everything would be all right.

3:Inverted sentences related to the structure

Delete if, and put were, should, 或had at the beginning of the sentence

Had you come earlier, you would have met him. =If you had come earlier, you would have met him.

4.Some prepositional phrases, such as: but for(要不是), without, otherwise(否则), in that case(如果是那样的话) can replace if-clauses

Examples

1.Without your help, we would not have made such rapid progress.

2. But for your help, I would fail.

3.Without the money, I would not live in this world now.

5.if only(“但愿”,“要…就好”)
