Teaching Procedures

Step 1. Lead-in

Enjoy an English song.

Look at the four sentences from the song, read them together and pay attention to the verb tenses.

Tell the students: They’re unreal conditionals, a kind of the subjunctive mood.

Find out the differences between the two sentences.

If I am free, I will visit you.

If I were a bird, I would fly into the sky.

We can find that : when we talk about a fact, we say If I am… I will….

But when we talk about an imaginary situation or something unreal, we say If I were… I would…. That’s what we call subjunctive mood.

Definition: Subjunctive mood is usually used to talk about the situations that are not true or not likely to become true.
