Activity 1 play a game
Game: all students are divided into two groups: group A and group B. Group A is asked to be out of the classroom with a task to guess what group A will hear based on the given key words, while group B listens to a story in the classroom. Then, students in group A are called in to find their partners in group B, forming some new pairs. The student from group A tells the prediction of the story first and then listens to the story told by the student from group B.
Question: what kind of story did you hear? What a life story is like can be concluded.(presented by PPT)
Activity 2 competition
Conduct a competition. Invite some pairs to be involved in the competition. Students from group A in each pair tell the story they hear from their partners. The other students decide whose story is closest to the original one. The winner will be given a prize
Review the story told by the winner, help analyze how to tell a life story. The following questions are asked first,
Did you hear the main characters in the story? Did you hear the time when the story happened? Did you hear the place where the story happened? Did you hear the main plot of the story? Did you hear the lessons we learnt from the story? (presented on the blackboard)
Activity 3 group work
Before the group work, show students some strategies for telling a life story well.
Strategies:
Tell a true story, using real names, clear time and place
Use words like suddenly, guess what? to make your story more interesting
Use a question to start to attract listeners’ attention
Use a surprising end if possible
Use some vivid words, for example, you can say “ on a winter morning when my feet and hands were frozen”, instead of saying “ on a cold winter morning.
