I. Brief introduction of the materials
Poetry is the third lesson of Unit 18, Module 6, Senior High English. In the previous lessons, students discussed the topics of “what is beauty” and “what is your favorite music”. So they come to understand beauty in the form of music. The focus of this lesson will be on guiding them to appreciate beauty in another form, that is, poems in terms of rhyme, tone and images.
II. Objectives
i. Knowledge objectives:
Students are to identify tone and images in poems.
Students are to learn rhyme in English poetry.
ii.Ability objectives
Students are to practice skimming and scanning skills while reading.
Students’ creative thinking can be activated in the course of completing the lines.
iii. Affective objectives
Students are encouraged to understand beauty in poetry in their study, which will benefit their future life.
Students’ teamwork spirit will be strengthened through the completion of a task.
III.Important points and special difficulties
i. Important points
Students are guided to learn how to appreciate English poems.
ii. Special difficulties
Students may have difficulty in understanding the poem due to difficult words. To solve this problem, I will use sketches and simple words to introduce difficult words
Teaching methodology and learning strategy
I.The task-based teaching approach
The task of this lesson is aimed at understanding and appreciating an English poem in terms of tone, images and rhyme. All the teaching procedures are designed on basis of it, which serves as the task cycle.
II.The cooperative learning
Students will be encouraged to discuss their understanding of poems in groups while developing their critical thinking. The application of cooperative learning will greatly ease students' tension while learning and encourage their team work spirit.
