Step I Warm-up

Look at a famous quote by an Irish playwriter George Bernard Shaw and let the students guess what it means. Then a video is shown for them to know what they are going to learn.

Qs: What English do I use? What did I say?

Design purpose: The students are to be stirred up with passion towards target learning.

Step II Lead-in

The students are asked to answer the following questions.

Q1: How many countries can you name where English is the native language?

Q2: Do all English speakers sound the same?

Design purpose: It is essential to clarify the basic issues before the lesson though it is not difficult.

Step III Research

1) Tackle the origin of English

Students are asked to look at some file from the early history to modern English. There are certainly many facts about the development of the English language. Think of some by themselves. Then go through the passage quickly within two minute and get the general idea. The teacher will ask some students to share their understanding.

Design purpose: The students are encouraged to think deep for the evolvement of English. They are also encouraged to read quickly and attentively. The step is designed to inspire all the students and let them make preparations for the following task.
